Bernice A. Buzzard, 89, of Davisville, died May 31, 2005, at her residence. She was born Oct. 27, 1915, in Jackson County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Leonard and Jessie Rowley Rhodes. She retired as a dental assistant with Dr. Charles Adams, worked for Fields Dental Laboratory and was also a cook for the Wood County School System. She was a member of the Murphytown Baptist Church, was a charter member of C.E.O.S., where she helped raise money for cancer research. She was honored at the 2005 Relay for Life of Wood County as this year's oldest cancer survivor. She was an avid traveler, organizing many trips and visiting every state in the United States. She was a staunch supporter of the Murphytown Lions Club and was an honorary member of Eastwood Fire Department. She is survived by her daughter, Constance Porter and husband, Michael, of Davisville; two brothers, Clifton and Edward Rhodes, both of Salineville, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Gregory DeQuasie of Pomeroy, Ohio, Kimberly Coffey of Parkersburg, Steven DeQuasie of Jackson County, Jennifer Elkins of Ravenswood, Michelle Buckner of Parkersburg, Kimberly and Nicole Porter, both of Cross Lanes, W.Va., and Desiree Porter of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 great-grandchildren; and her Murphytown Baptist Church family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth W. Buzzard on July 2, 1989; daughter, Patricia DeQuasie; sister, Beulah Leffler; two brothers, Weldon and Kenneth Rhodes; and great-granddaughter, Rachael Elkins. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Russell Crawford and the Rev. Dearl Porter officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery North.
