Four injured in interstate wreck

By ROGER ADKINS, Staff Writer

PARKERSBURG — Four people were injured Wednesday after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 77 near the Seventh Street exit.

Leona Michaels, 71, address unknown, and her 80-year-old husband, Paul Michaels, were in a GMC 1500 and were taken to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital after the 3:17 p.m. crash. Jodi White, 18, and Michael Baker, 21, were in the second vehicle, a Ford Escort GT, and also were taken to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, said Wood County sheriff’s deputy Kent Stephens.

All four people were treated and released, hospital officials said.  The Ford Escort was northbound on I-77 when the driver, White, braked suddenly because of a deer in the road, Stephens said.

“There was a herd of deer in the road; we’re not sure how many because we’re getting conflicting statements on that,” Stephens said.

Michaels was behind the Escort and unable to stop in time. Her vehicle struck the rear of the Escort and both vehicles skidded 50 to 60 feet, police said. The Escort spun and the rear of the vehicle struck the guardrail. The rear passenger compartment of the vehicle was crushed.

Traffic was restricted for about half an hour while emergency responders worked to clear the scene.

In addition to sheriff’s deputies, Eastwood Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene along with Pifer’s Towing.

No citations were issued in the crash.

Pennsboro man killed in automobile accident on U.S. 50

By BRETT DUNLAP, Staff Writer

PARKERSBURG — A man was killed in a single-car accident early Wednesday morning, possibly caused by ice on the road, officials said.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to U.S. 50 at Dry Run Road at 2:50 a.m. where a vehicle slid off the road.

A 1993 Chevy Blazer driven by John Goto, 50, McDougal Drive, Pennsboro, was traveling east on U.S. 50 when he lost control of his vehicle, went into the median strip, rolled 1.5 times and partially ejected the driver after coming to rest on its top.

Goto was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s department reported.

The accident is believed to have been caused by icy road conditions, the department said.

Also responding to the accident were the Wood County Crash Team, the Eastwood Volunteer Fire Department and Camden-Clark Ambulance.

Arson suspected in Walker fire

By DAVE PAYNE Sr.

WALKER — Arson is suspected in a fire that engulfed a vacant mobile home at 258-1 Atkinson Ridge Road Friday, said Mike Dailey, deputy chief of the East Wood Volunteer Fire Department.

The home had been vacant for years and no one was injured, although it did take firefighters several hours to get the blaze under control, he said. The fire department received the call around 8 p.m. Friday, he said.

“It looks like someone may have driven by and started it, but we are not sure if it was arson,” he said.

Dailey said the owner of the building is David Modesitt and that it was a total loss. He said firefighters were on the scene for 15 hours trying to extinguish the flames.

“There was a lot of debris inside the house, in some places it was piled five or six feet high. It was very hard to extinguish it,” he said.

The fire remains under investigation.

Responding to the fire were East Wood, Mineral Wells VFD, Wood County Office of Emergency Services, Wood County Sheriff’s Department and the Wood County Fire Investigation Team. The Lubeck VFD was on standby at the East Wood station and a Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital ambulance responded to the scene in case any firefighters required medical treatment, which none did, Dailey said.

Wood County deputies responded to Progress Ridge Road Saturday afternoon in reference to an 11-year-old boy and two 5-year-old girls being missing in the woods.

Family members made a search of the area, but were unable to located the missing children before contacting emergency personnel, the sheriff's department reported.

A search was conducted by emergency personnel beginning around 6 p.m. About 90 minutes later, the family received a phone call from an individual on Edens Road, approximately five miles from the children's residence on Progress Ridge, advising that the missing children were at his residence.

Emergency personnel responded to the residence and located the missing children. They were checked for injuries by paramedics and returned to their parents, the sheriff's department reported.

Route 50 Outages
WTAP News
Rachel Withers

Thousands of Allegheny customers remained without power Saturday evening after five utility poles snapped along Route 50.

About 6:30 Saturday evening, a tree fell along Route 50, downing power, cable, and telephone lines for a two mile stretch. Route 50 was shut down from the I-77 Interchange to Red Hill Road for about three hours as crews worked to clear the downed lines from the highway.

Officials with the Eastwood Volunteer Fire Department were at the scene, stopping traffic and helping drivers find alternate ways to reach their destinations.

Traffic has been moving smoothly along Route 50 since 9:30 Saturday evening. Officials with Allegheny Power expect it will be 24 hours before power is restored to everyone.

Brushfire
WTAP News
Denise Alex

Nearly 50 acres of forest was burned, and fire officials warn illegal activity could have caused the brushfire.

Around 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon, a fire spread quickly through Route 47 near the Freeport area of Wirt County.

Doug Hill, an Elizabeth firefighter, says the wind and heavy timbering were obstacles in battling the blaze that took a few hours to get under control.

He says Cairo and Eastwood firefighters helped contain the fire.

Hill reminds people it is fire season in West Virginia, so any burning before 4 p.m. and left unattended is against the law.

The West Virginia Division of Forestry is investigating the blaze.
